  • Selection Steps:

    1. Select worm gear to meet or exceed the valve torque. Does the valve torque include a safety factor? If no, add an appropriate value and use the new torque to select the worm gear. Worm gear sizes and ratios for on/off applications are shown on a subsequent table. For modulating ratings consult the Limitorque Ratings Charts. Example: valve torque of 5000 ft-lbs. Choose WG-04-1 SD-B. Torque rating = 7670 ft-lbs B = bronze worm gear. Consult the Ratings Chart WGB or WOD tabs.
    2. Check the maximum bore capacity of the worm gears with valve stem diameter. Make sure the valve stem is smaller than the max bore capacity. Max bore = 3.25 in.
    3. Select the larger (if more than one) of the available ratios. A smaller ratio worm gear results in a larger, more expensive actuator. Choose 252:1
    4. Calculate the mechanical advantage: MA = Ratio x efficiency. (ex: 252:1 x .26 = 65.5) Or use the value in the worm gear ratios and ratings table
    5. Determine the actuator torque required: Valve torque / MA = actuator torque. Example: 5000 / 65.5 = 76.3 ft-lbs actuator torque.
    6. Determine actuator RPM required: gear ratio / 4 / valve travel time x 60 = actuator rpm Example: 252:114 /30 sec x 60 sec/min = 126 rpm
    7. Select MX actuator with torque rating that meets and exceeds torque calculated In step 5 and is closest to rpm calculated in step 6. Example: select MX•10; 10Orpm/89 ft-lbs
    8. Use WG worm gear: WG-04-1 SD-B; 252:1; 7,670 ft-lbs
